Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
